Religions, all of them, are like the kid's game "Simon Says".
You all l know how it goes you are supposed to only do things if 'Simon Says". i.e. Simon says put your hands on you head so you do it, Simon says stand on one foot so you do it. Clap your hands and you do it and you lose the game because it was not prefixed with Simon Says.
God doesn't say anything the religious followers do things what some man has written or said. All the scribes and prophets were definitely mortal because they lived and died.
It is not in doubt doing what the church leaders say is no different to the kid's game "Simon Says".
Check it out, and feel free to disagree.

But in the game, if the leader tells you to do something without saying "Simon says" and you do it you're out.
I'd be more worried about a religious leader who tells you to do something but doesn't do it himself.
I'm not too keen on being told what to do, whether by a religious leader or an over-enthusiastic legislator.
I'll buy a bicycle when I'm no longer told to wear headgear.
